Atenas is a small town with a population of approximately 15,000 people. It is large enough to have 5 supermarkets, many doctors’ and dentists’ offices, and lots of pharmacies, but still have a small-town feel where people hang out in the central park and walk all around town. Restaurants vary from local cafes to a couple of high-end international restaurants. In addition to the public schools, there are two private elementary and two private high schools, all costing a fraction of the amount of private schools in San Jose or in the United States.
Location, location, location…Atenas has it. Only 25 minutes to Escazu which has the Multiplaza mall, CIMA hospital, the new Clinica Biblica hospital, and every American restaurant you could crave. Atenas is also 35 minutes from the international airport and will be only 20 minutes from the new airport in Orotina when it is completed. Only 50 minutes to the closest beach, you can easily go for a day to the beach without having to live in heat.
Atenas is between 700 to 900 meters above sea level, depending on if you are downtown or up in the surrounding mountains. The temperature in Costa Rica doesn’t vary much from season to season but rather on the altitude. The temperature in Atenas varies between 65 F⁰ at night to 85 F⁰ during the day.
